Your right. The Cub’s would need to part with half their farm system to get a #1. And that’s provided that someone would want what the Cubs have. But did the Twins get fair value for Santana? And who is dealing a top of the rotation guy? Look at the rosters around the league and see a) What team is projecting to be bad enough to dump a top pitcher, and b) Which of those teams HAS a top pitcher. This was something that needed to be addressed in the off-season. The starting pitching is this clubs Achilles heal.

Big D, all those young Cubs minor leaguers you mentioned are mid-level prospects. You’ll need more than that to get a top of the rotation starter.

3-4 guys are out there. But I think Cubs might need a legit 2 behind Zambrano. Wasn’t that supposed to be Rich Hill?

Isn’t it about time we pillaged the Pirates for some mid-season help? Which teams are the early season favorites to wave the white flag? Padres? Blue Jays? Mariners? Nationals? There has got to be something there. As for the dearth of prospects in the Cubs organization, theres plenty. Murton, Hart, Patterson, Gallagher and Marshall all are young with big league experience and value. How much value is debatable. But the Cubs should be looking for short term, remainder of the year. There has to be a solid 3-4 guy out there…somewhere.

Chan Ho Park?? Sid Ponson?? That may be what they’ll have to settle for though because DHaab nails it: “However, that will be the toughest trade to make, especially considering the Cubs don’t have nearly as many quality young players to trade away like they did a few years back.”

The team needs a veteran starting pitcher. Muddux would fit well. Other candidates; Tim Redding; Chan Ho Park; Sidney Ponson; Carlos Silva… just throwing out names. You can throw ‘em back.

I think the bullpen is fine for the most part. But if Howry keeps stinking it up, they may need another arm there. I would go after another top starting pitcher if I were Hendry. However, that will be the toughest trade to make, especially considering the Cubs don’t have nearly as many quality young players to trade away like they did a few years back.
