PADS READY TO DEAL PEAVY TO CUBS

5

The Cubs signed Jason Marquis to a 3-year, $21 million contract as he was coming off a season in which he had one of the worst ERAs in the league. I wrote at the time: “He’s merely a rehab project; a very costly one at that.” It turns out he might cost them more than just dollars.

From Ken Rosenthal on Fox Sports:

“The Cubs continue to seek a landing spot for right-hander Jason Marquis, whose $9.875 million salary would need to be cleared to create payroll flexibility for the addition of a left-handed hitter and/or Peavy. The Cubs tried to interest the Phillies in Marquis, but received only lukewarm interest.”

So there you have it. When teams with huge payrolls finally have to tighten the belt, poor free-agent signings come home to roost. Clubs can be hindered from obtaining another player, maybe even a Jake Peavy. This may never affect the Yanks or Red Sox, but the Cubs are feeling it right now.

Who knows what will become of Marquis? But the Padres are ready to deal Peavy to the Cubs. How bad would it be if Jason Marquis was the obstacle?

    Ha! Cry me a river.

Random thing here, but what about Brian Giles in this deal? I know the Pad’s have been interested in moving him since he’s getting older and is still a big price tag. Not sure the Cubs can afford him, too (and not sure how much longer his contract goes for?), but solves the one-year leftie outfielder rental. :)

Not a bad thought. And LOL D! D– what do you think about Burnett to Cards? Supposedly they are working on it hard.

Mozeliak already shot the Burnett rumor down a few days ago.
He’s reportedly looking to trade an OF’er (possibly Ankiel) for a starting pitcher. I think Ankiel is the right guy to trade right now. They have Rasmus almost ready to step in at CF and Ludwick will be a cheap corner OF’er for the next 3 years. Ankiel is arbitration eligible right now and he’s a free agent after ‘09. His agent is Boras, so you know he’s going to get huge money.

Also, I think they may try and sign Oliver Perez or Randy Wolf. Also they’re supposedly trying to sign Fuentes now as well. K-Rod didn’t get as much $ as some were thinking, so I think that puts the Cards back in the market to possibly sign a closer.

Back to Peavy, I honestly don’t think he’s going anywhere.

Maybe he isn’t. And here’s wondering if the Pads are the easiest team to deal with.
