VOTE FOR PEDRO?
Over at SI, Jon Heyman has a column about Pedro Martinez, and how his best fit would be the Dodgers. He writes: “The Dodgers need someone like Martinez to tutor their staff. Maddux was that guy in recent seasons, and Martinez could ably fill that role. He is a sage and stable veteran.” I can see it now…
“Hey rookie–this is how you push down really old coaches!”
“Make sure you apply lots and lots of Jheri-Curl–make it juicy!”
Stupid jokes aside, Martinez is off to pitch in the WBC. It’s an audition of sorts for one of this era’s best pitchers. Out of all the hot stove news and rumors, I’ve read about Martinez now twice. Heyman’s column and a blurb about the Pirates being interested, but not at Pedro’s asking price of $7 million.
Of course this led me to thinking about the back end of the White Sox rotation. It features some combo of Jeff Marquez, Clayton Richard, Bartolo Colon, Lance Broadway and possibly Aaron Poreda.
If Martinez throws well in the WBC, does Ken Williams give him a call? He should.
