HAWK HARRELSON’S FIRST ERROR OF THE YEAR

8

Listen to what Hawk Harrelson had to say about Joe Mauer.

I love Hawk but this is a fairly ridiculous notion. I used to hear the same thing about Ichiro, and I’m pretty sure Hawk was the one espousing that theory too. If indeed Joe Mauer could hit lots of home runs, he would. His manager would tell him to do it.

Joe Mauer plays in a domed stadium but has hit 44 home runs in 5 major league seasons. He hit all of 9 homers in 5 minor league seasons. Joe Mauer cannot hit a lot of home runs if he wanted to. Could he sacrifice a bit of average to hit a few more? Sure. Could he hit a lot? No.

They use to say the same thing about Wade Boggs, too…back in the day!

I agree with Hawk on this one. A bunch of pro baseball players sacrifice their averages to hit for more power. And, just a side note here, Stone didn’t disagree with Harrelson on his point.

BTW, the headline should say “Hawk Harrelson’s First Errah” ;)

  4. Zoner says:

Stone is not in the habit of correcting his broadcast partners. Mauer could hit a few more, sure. But if he is hitting for average because he thinks that’s better than hitting for power that is foolish.

And dang, why didn’t i think of titling the post with “errah”!

I find it hard to believe that an old school baseball fan like you thinks it’s better to hit for more power than have a better OPB and batting average. Uggh!

  6. Zoner says:

He’d still be a good hitter and get on-base. And homers are 4 total bases. Dig?

  7. Exactly right Zoner.
Mauer is a line driver hitter, not a power hitter. I think the Ichiro comparison is perfect, both are hitting machines, yet they are dubbed as potential HR kings. Very few high average guys are power hitters. Look at Gwynn and the aforementioned Boggs.

By the way…not a surprise Hawk made a mistake. This one was nearly as much BS! as previous mistakes.

It seems like hes hitting a lot more home runs this year you son of a bitch. Hawk is the man.
