  1. That’s hilarious. Hopefully it’s accurate. I would like to believe Griffey and Thome are clean. Sammy at sixth is a joke.

  2. Zoner says:

I so badly hope that Thome and Griffey are clean too. I wouldn’t want our entire era to be a sham.

  3. charrington says:

Excellent post. It really makes me see how bias MBL elite are by allowing people that have committed felonies and destroyed the purity of baseball keep their records and jobs. Then we have a guy that has given his whole life to baseball and is basically banished for gambling (not on baseball). I’m sorry I think Pete Rose was one of the best players in history and they allow these losers to use drugs to break records is like allowing aluminum bats and super balls – it changed the game forever. They need to have their names removed from baseball…

  4. cheddar says:

Nice. The only one I would disagree with is ManRam, but everyone else is accurate. And, I don’t think there’s a doubt that K-Griff and Thome are clean. Two stand-up dudes, and two of the best sluggers to ever play.

  5. CMoney says:

You should have Josh Gibson on the list. You might want to take babe ruth off too (or move him down the list), he didn’t play against african americans. And Ted Williams should honorarily be moved up since he gave up 4 years in his prime to fight for our country. that’s a real man…

  6. Chinch says:

I agree with you guys. I hope Griffey and Thome are clean. Man that would suck to have all of our “grates” be total cheaters. All the others should be banned. They didn’t achieve anything…and I mean ANYTHING! Glorified ball-boys. Good point charrington, I don’t think Rose should be banned if these “ball players” stats are going to be accepted.

  7. Adam says:

You are a fool. How bout removing Foxx for playing in the “rabbit ball” era when home runs were a dime a dozen? Or moving down Ott for having a 200 foot right field foul pole at the Polo Grounds? Or move up Williams and Mays for military service? Or ban Ruth for not playing against any blacks or latinos?

Context. Numbers are nothing but squiggly lines without context. 50 home runs in 1915 doesn’t mean the same as 50 home runs in 1927 or 1960 or 1995 or 2009. No single stat in the history of baseball was generated in a vacuum.

  8. peter says:

This is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen.

How about including the homers Bonds hit while clean?

How about accounting for the fact that Thome clearly has the track record and build of a juicer?

  9. Johnny says:

Riiiiigh. ManRam is legit. That whole 50 game suspension was for nothing.

  10. Zoner says:

Thanks for all the comments. I made the list based solely on those who have been caught.

  11. mcdonald says:

Yeah, out of modern players, Griffey and Frank Thomas are the only objectively clean players. Thome’s head resembles Bond’s.

  12. Zoner says:

One other thing, it’s only for MLB, so Gibson and Oh aren’t on it, thought they definitely deserve props. It was mostly a tongue-in-cheek jab at this era’s juicers.

  13. Rocky says:

Griffey has officially become the greatest player of his generation. he did everything, and he did it all right and with class. The biggest knock on him was when he was younger that he “played defense to hard”

  14. Tim Jenkins says:

Haha that list a good representation of how much better the players in the past were, ethically as well as athletically. Those were the good ‘ole days, man. Reggie Jackson was and always will be my favorite Yankee. Mr. October is a true legend. That’s probably the reason he was invited to that legends challenge event being held in the Bahamas.

  15. Joe G says:

Frank Thomas and Jr. got screwed out of money and records. Not using steroids probably cost them each $50,000,000. The Dodgers should get to void Manny’s contract after a positive test.

  16. bigyaz says:

charrington: Pete Rose most assuredly bet on baseball — he even bet on is own team! Let’s stick to the facts, please.

  17. Jeff Self says:

    @bigyaz,

You are right. Rose says that he only bet on the Reds to win. Thats his defense. The problem with that is he didn’t bet every game. Therefore, to the bookies, that means when he didn’t bet on the Reds to win, to them it meant Rose expected the Reds to lose.

I don’t blame the players. The owners looked the other way. They wanted the home runs. They built the home run friendly stadiums. They told the umpires to shrink the strike zone and eliminated the brush back pitch.

  18. Jeff K. says:

You only made the list based on those who got caught? Then why the hell is McGwire marked out? What test did he fail? None.

What was he caught with? Andro? Not against the rules or illegal then.

If you’re going to argue that it should have been, or is now, then you better start marking off guys for amphetamine use. Guys like Willie and Mickey, who’ve been quoted or had others mention their use of ‘greenies’.

  19. LongHairSteve says:

If they paid Mickey Mantel as much as players as today he would hit twice as many home runs, and Babe Ruth would have hit ten times as many homers, easy.

I don’t agree with taking anyone off the list, for every reason there are 100 more reasons that could be used to make a difference thru the ages.

And career hits is one measure, so is hits per season. Most of all the non-list of style preference is most endearing to memories of greats.

Gotta say tho, that the idea Babe Ruth gave a damn about the color of the pitcher takes the cake for absurd stupidity.

  20. Sooze says:

Griffey using performance-enhancers would be the one piece of news that would absolutely crush me. Nice updated list.

  21. Zoner says:

    Babe Ruth was black.

  22. Zoner says:

Why is McGwire marked out? Are you serious? How about his weepy pleading of the 5th? Do we have a Cardinals fan in the house? You betcha!

    Thanks Sooze!

  23. Jamie Majik says:

I like that Im not the only Jackson fan out there (Tim Jenkins) The man was stellar…yea I said it…stellar! I think its phenomenal that is still hanging around encouraging players of today and giving them advice on what worked for him. Obviously he knows what he is talkin about all of the success he has had. Its good to hear he has been invited to be a legend. I wish I could be invited to the Bahamas for a vacation in honor of being good at something that I loved to do.

  24. Dick Munchson says:

    Manny is legit… female fertility drugs does not = 548 HR / 1762 RBI / .315 avg

  25. daniel fox says:

Thank you for getting it right. I absolutely believe that Griff junior is the only active player beyond reproach. I love the game although the steroid issue breaks my heart I truly love the game and its history. I never bought into the “chicks dig the long ball” ads–knew something was going on back then and spoke out about it. I was always suspicious of Ortiz and Mariano Rivera and now that Ortiz has been exposed, I’m still waiting on Rivera. All these guys need to get out of the game including Manny, A-Rod,
Pettite, etc. They are all steroid junkies.

  26. Juan says:

What the number between parenthesis () mean?

  27. LOL says:

This sucks. What about Aaron admitting to using amphetamines? this obviously enhanced his play…

  28. lane says:

thome and k-griffy are clean its a no brainer that bonds and the rest are not clean so they can go and be a bigger sham for not admiting to it

  29. lane says:

    thome ang griffy r clean

  30. lane says:

ur a dummy that isnt a ped or hgh or steroids like bonds and every other player took. duh
