3 WEEKS FOR A BLISTER TO HEAL?
We knew it was inevitable that Kerry Wood would end up on the DL. But who knew it would be for a blister–one that is taking exceedingly long to heal.
As Jim Hendry said: “It’s just a real bad case. The blister has taken a long, long time to heal,” general manager Jim Hendry said. “A lot of skin irritation and things like that.”
The Tribune reports that Wood will miss the next 4 games and likely more.
“That would give Wood three weeks of rest since his last appearance on July 11, and it could be much longer. Wood threw a bullpen session on Monday, but it did not go well.
“He threw with a protective pad on [the index finger] for a while and it felt OK,” Piniella said. “Then he took it off and tried to throw without it, and he couldn’t.”
For a team that probably still needs another bullpen arm, having Wood out this long hurts. Howry is just not getting it done. Marmol scared everyone with a walk in the 9th last night. Samardzija may get some chances, and plenty of rookies have come in as closers, but I still don’t find that to be optimal.
Here’s guessing Jim Hendry is working the phones looking for another power arm.
