Dan Pompeii has an interview with Bears GM Jerry Angelo in today’s Tribune. Some samples:

On trading Chris Harris and Thomas Jones: “I wouldn’t go back and do anything different.” Sure you would. You’d trade Benson instead.

On the aging O-Line: “Fred Miller, it’s not totally unheard of where he is in his career. He played good football for us this year.” Jer…Call Lenscrafters. You need an exam and some new specs.

On Benson: “I don’t question his want-to, his work ethic, passion, anything like that. It just wasn’t happening. He hasn’t really laid the foundation he needs to in terms of being the guy. But we still believe in him.” OK. But it wasn’t happening. So make sure you have a legitimate plan B, like Rashard Mendenhall.

And he also mentioned that he is content with the 3 QBs that are currently here, although Rex is a free agent. Wild.

    Trading Harris was a mistake only because Archuletta was so terrible. Had AA worked out then we would have been ok w/out Harris. Hopefully Mike Brown can stay healthy here on out. Sure sounded like Angelo was tired of Brown missing game time.

    Why can Angelo count on Grossman and not Brown? They have each been injured too much.

    As for Archuleta, I didn’t want to believe it and had to see it for myself, but there was plenty of evidence that he was not playing at a high level for the last few seasons. They totally blew that one and you have to believe that falls on Lovie.

    All I know is that there are a slew of running backs available in this draft. They better get one.

    Well said, Z. I agree on all fronts. I hope we got O-Line w/the 1st pick though. IMO we need 2 O-linemen for next season.

    I have a feeling we might get Micheal Turner. Even though he makes me nervous… I’m not completely sold on his ability. Hope the Burner gets some playing time vs. NE this weekend.

    But I think where the concern should be is in his ability to handle a greater workload. But if he were to be paired with Benson, he wouldn’t have to be a 300-carry back, ostensibly. It also bears looking into when he got his big yards. Were they in the 4th quarter of blowouts? After LT shred up and tired out defenses?

    That said he is still better than anyone we have on our roster so I would go get him. Should Benson flame out they can then draft another back to pair with Turner.

    Yeah, sure, the Bears are going to give Michael Turner a 4 year 25+ million dollar contract to share carries with Benson.

    I don’t dream about anyone sharing carries with Benson. But if Benson is going to be here he is likely going to play. Seeing as Turner hasn’t carried 300+ times since 2003 at NIU, it might be a lot to ask. That Benson would get 80-100 carries, like when Thomas Jones was here, isn’t at all unrealistic.

    I’m just saying the Bears won’t be winning the lottery for Turner’s services, especially considering how much they’re already paying Benson and the fact that Turner will probably want to play for a team where he is the man.
