BEARS WEEK 5 REVIEW

6

Stream of consciousness thoughts on week 5…

John St. Clair makes me want the return of John Tait. Now.

Danieal Manning cannot play cornerback. He’s fast physically, but not in reaction time.

Cedric Benson is slow, has poor vision or both. The difference between the way Vernand Morency hit the hole and how Benson did was ridiculous. Morency got the handoff and exploded toward the line. Benson takes handoffs and decelerates.

Walter Payton cringed in heaven when Benson ran out of bounds instead of hitting a DB. Are you serious? HIT A PACKER!

Griese was awesome. Especially considering the Bears STILL can’t run the ball.

Kudos to Ron Turner for at least trying to run it more, and for the awesome play-action call on the scoring pass to Clark.

Welcome, Greg Olsen. We’ve been waiting for you.

Lance Briggs was everywhere.

Charles Tillman is a Pro-Bowl Corner.

Nick Barnett lives to play the Bears.

Maybe Muhammad can’t get open anymore. But I love when he gets the ball. They have to find a way to get him the ball more. He can still be a weapon.

At home against the Vikes next week. This isn’t over yet.

What a way to put the Cubs debacle behind the curtain…Personally, I thought St. Clair did well filling in for Tait (especially facing Gbaja-Biamila with only half a sack) however, I do agree with you that he did get exploited at times in the running game. Then again, he has Benson running behind him who thinks he can outrun people outside the tackle and Green Bay continually slanted down. Hint for Benson: Try cutting back once in a while. It even works in Madden 08…I wish I could control him with an L1/R1 button sometimes. Excellent play call by Turner, especially considering using Clark at that point which had Green Bay figuring run due to his blocking ability. Also nice to see Clark’s read on Nick Collins, which allowed him to go up the seam. Who knows how that game turns out minus the strips by Tillman.

Nice to see Olson & Hester on O.

Now we just need to get both Clark and Olson on the field at the same time. Any 2 year old could see how strategic that would be.

Hester needs to stay on O for at least 20 plays.

Our run blocking sucks big time. Our RBs suck as well. Wolfe is not the answer. I wish JA would call Cory Dillon.

The play Benson ran out of bounce… RIDICULOUS!

Maybe I was a bit hard on St. Clair.

2 tight end sets look to be future of the Bears, at least in the near future. The line is still hurting and not performing up to par, Berrian is hurt and your 2 biggest weapons are seemingly Olsen and Clark. How awesome is it that they had Olsen split wide! This is the Bears for goodness’ sake!!! So a 2 TE set ostensibly would help the run and keep those 2 on the field for pass or max protect.

Madden and Michaels were laying it on Benson. I cannot think of any Bear I’ve ever liked less than CB. I’m SO curious as to what Adrian Peterson would do with 15-20 carries. Hmmmm….we might see that next week too.

Geez, after reading through this, it almost looks like the Bears didn’t make a great comeback on the road in the 2nd half to maybe salvage their season. Good play calling by Ron Turner in the 2nd half. Griese is a better option for this team than Rex and most of us already knew that a long time ago.

BTW, what happened to all the Cubs talk? :o

Not too harsh on St. Clair at all…I actually feared him starting as well…nice to see them help with Peterson in pass protection. Completely agree with the two tight end scheme. You see the difference with Olsen and Clark. Clark gets a linebacker and Olsen calls for a safety in coverage. Clark could always stay home after reading blitz to help with protection and even release on the check route. Now send Hester deep down the field (after he goes in motion please) and you’ve obtained both safeties in coverage which just begs for Muhammad/Davis/Bradley over the middle. Like Zoner said, Muhammad definitely still has worth as a possession receiver.

The Bears have tried to spread things out with using the slot and it just hasn’t worked. No one fears the run and defenses can opt for a nickel or compensate with speed at linebacker. Griese was impressive by spreading the ball around. As for Peterson, the screen sure seemed to work…

BTW, How nice was it to see Mark Bradley catch a nice crossing route? More importantly, it was the play call which had Hester going deep and drew double coverage. It seemed as if Ron Turner pulled out the 1994 playbook…

Real nice to see Bradley. Berrian better get healthy quickly–if Bradley keeps playing he will take his job. Of course, Bradley has had the injury bug too, but with all of Berrian’s drops Bradley can make things really difficult for the coaches.
