BEDARD MAY PRECEDE ROBERTS
Yes, it’s another Brian Roberts post.
The Mariners have called back outfielder Adam Jones from winter ball and supposedly was on his way to Baltimore for a physical. Baltimore is said to be receiving Jones and a package of other prospects for Erik Bedard.
“If the Orioles do complete the Bedard trade, word is they would likely then send All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts (.290, 12 HR, 57 RBIs, 50 SBs) to the Chicago Cubs for prospects, possibly outfielder Felix Pie and pitcher Sean Gallagher (3-1, 2.66 at Triple-A Iowa). Pie batted .362 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs at Triple-A Iowa but hit just .215 in 177 at-bats with the Cubs in 2007.”
I assume this would mean that Fukudome becomes the full-time centerfielder and DeRosa the full-time rightfielder. Perhaps then the Cubs keep Matt Murton, also rumored to be dealt in recent days. The Cubs have been said to be talking with the Rangers about Marlon Byrd and also with the Padres.
If the Padres went to camp as they are currently constructed, Scott Hairston would be their starter in left field. They have Edmonds in center and Giles in right. That team needs a bat, badly.
So maybe Brian Roberts will become a Cub. Or not.
