BERRIAN WANTS THE TOP MONEY
File this under wacky. Tribune’s Vaughn McClure reports:
Bernard Berrian is starting to make the kind of big-time plays expected of a No. 1 receiver. Now he wants to be paid like one.
Berrian was asked by WMVP-AM 1000′s “Mac, Jurko and Harry” if he expects to be among the 10 highest-paid wide receivers.
“It depends. I mean, in a way, yeah, actually, yeah, I do,” he said. “I’ve still got to play and finish out the season. If I have any dropoff from what I’m doing now, then no. But if I still continue to play the way I’m playing and progress, then yes.”
Kind of ironic he used the word “dropoff”. Has any Bears receiver dropped more passes than Berrian this year? Doubtful, even though I acknowledge there have been many culprits. Perhaps the Bears asked Berrian to do more than his previous role as deep threat–maybe too much. Because he rarely seems comfortable on anything over the middle.
I like Berrian and he obviously has skills and some moxie. The play he made on Sunday was nothing short of spectacular. But if he wants to be paid like a top 10 receiver, then have a nice career on the Jets. Because I could name 20 wide receivers that I would rather have than Berrian.
