BIG BAD BEN WALLACE

1

Valued reader Schmidty passed this along, quite a different perspective on the Bulls’ signing of Ben Wallace last year.

Ben Wallace
Cost per rebound in 2005-06 – $8,125
Cost per rebound in 2006-07 – $19,488
Cost per playoff win in 2005-06 – $750,000
Cost per playoff win in 2006-07 – $2,666,667
Having your division rival solve a potentially sticky financial problem for you? Priceless.

Wow. I wonder if any of them watched the Bulls sweep the Heat last year. Because Wallace was huge in that series, or as Bulls GM John Paxson says, “Ben’s just a man”. The difference defensively between Wallace and ex-Bull Tyson Chandler is enormous. And I’m not talking about ‘tallest guy gets rebounds’ defense. I’m talking about protecting the paint. People ran over Chandler. Ben flattens them. He defends. And Chandler can only dream about defending Shaq like Wallace did in that series. Chandler would need the cream, the clear and the phone number to Paul Byrd’s dentist to even attempt it. That’s where Big Ben proved what a difference maker he is–during the playoffs.

The difference between the Cavs/Pistons series in ’06 and the Cavs/Pistons series in ’07? Hmmm…. Most of the experts picked Detroit. What could they have been missing?

See, I find this kind of blog pretty much pointless because it really doesn’t matter if the Bulls have an inside guy like Wallace because they’re a team without a superstar. And in the David Stern NBA, you need one star to make a run in the playoffs. Also, the fact that the Eastern conference is horribly bad is really the only reason the Bulls are considered a decent team at this point. If they were in the West, they would be considered an average team. Kind of like the Bears in the NFC.
