BIG Z WANTS BIG DOLLARS
And why not? If anyone deserves them it’s Carlos Zambrano.
“I’m ready to sign, and I would do my job anyway with the Cubs this year,” Zambrano said. “Whatever happens, I don’t want to know [anything] about a contract during the season. I want to sign with the Cubs before the season starts. If they don’t sign me, sorry, but I must go. That’s what Carlos Zambrano thinks.”
Usually the ultimatum is no contract discussion during the season. Z says now or never. It’s an interesting stance because no matter the market you don’t want to eliminate a potential suitor at any point. Zambrano has just done that. It must be an issue of perceived disrespect that he’s yet to be signed to a big deal.
Regardless, I see no reason why Jim Hendry won’t be announicing a new deal soon. If he can throw large money at league-average pitchers like Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis, surely he can pony up for a true ace. If he doesn’t he will look like a complete fool for using funds that could have gone to Zambrano for Lilly and Marquis. Zambrano surely understands this, as does his representation. What will make matters worse is when Lilly and Marquis don’t have much better production than Carlos Marmol and Sean Marshall might have provided. Cubs baseball…never boring.
