Here and there around the Chicago sports scene…
Did you see Larry Hughes had his 2nd straight DNP-CD against the Cavs last night? And he played only 7 minutes against Portland. Does this mean the message has been sent? Or is it just that Hinrich is back? Or is a trade looming?
The Bulls played inspired ball in beating the Cavs. LeBron got posterized by Joakim Noah, shot 8-28 and had 8 turnovers. He still ended up with 28/14/7, but the Bulls prevailed. Tyrus had a nice game with 4 blocks–including a huge swat on LeBron– 15 points and 7 boards.
Johnny ‘Red’ Kerr is going to get a statue, and a halftime ceremony on February 10th at the UC. You have to love Red’s passion for the Bulls, if not the analysis. I find the little halftime visits with him quite awkward, and I would have preferred that they kept him as the 3rd man on the TV side.
The White Sox have signed Bartolo Colon. Don Cooper says that “Kenny got us a guy who can help us win.” Maybe on ‘The Biggest Loser’. Baseball games? Not so sure. With all the free agent starting pitchers out there, it’s kind of surprising that Williams would go sign Colon. He’s pitched a grand total of 194 innings over the last 3 seasons.
One of Williams’ pickups in the Vazquez trade was catcher Tyler Flowers. Flowers absolutely dominated the Arizona Fall League, hitting .387 with 12 homers and a .987 slugging percentage. He did not make an error behind the plate. He’s only 23.
