CUBS BUILDING OUTFIELD ARMY

0

By the time the 2009 All-Star break arrives, So Taguchi will be 40 years old. Will he still be with the Cubs? Jim Hendry signed the former Cardinal to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.

Taguchi was used mainly as a pinch-hitter in Philly last year and had a rough year. Perhaps he was misused.

Whatever the case, the Cubs now have 7 or 8 outfielders, depending on how you size up the roster:

  1. Bradley
  2. Soriano
  3. Fukudome
  4. Johnson
  5. Pie
  6. Gathright
  7. Hoffpauir (maybe more of a 1b)
  8. Taguchi

It’s interesting to note (said in my best Vin Scully voice) that Pie is out of options. And furthermore, the Cubs roster looks like it will be set up to carry 5 OFs on the 25-man roster, unless they go with 11 pitchers instead of 12. Then that would allow them an extra OF.

I guess the point is: would you rather have Pie or Gathright or Taguchi? I’ll take Pie. So unless there is a trade looming, what happens to Pie? And don’t you want Hoffpauir to take the Daryle Ward role?

Just 29 days until pitchers and catchers!
