Denver Broncos and coach each fined $50,000 by NFL

The Denver Broncos and their head coach Josh McDaniels were each fined $50,000 by the NFL after it was revealed that a Broncos’ employee videotaped some of the San Francisco 49ers training session at Wembley Stadium in London, England at the end of October. Taping another team’s practice is a against the NFL’s integrity-of-the-game policy. The incident took place on Oct. 30th, a day before the two teams met in England. San Francisco ended up winning the game 24-16.

Denver informed the league Steve Scarnecchia, the club’s video director, filmed a portion of the practice and gave it to McDaniels, who says he refused to watch it. The league fined McDaniels anyway because he didn’t report the incident in a timely manner. The NFL found out that Denver executives knew about the incident on Nov. 8th.

The Broncos held an internal review of the situation and contacted the league on Nov. 12 to report it. A meeting was held with the NFL four days later with Denver executives and its owner being present. The NFL then started an investigation with the club’s personnel and analyzed the video department’s laptop computers. The proof was found and the fines were then given out.

McDaniels released a statement that apologized for the incident and said he understood and agrees with the fine. He added that the Broncos have dealt with the situation internally and will make sure nothing of this nature will take place again.

Scarnecchia was fired by Denver and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell could possibly ban him from the NFL for being a repeat offender of the league’s when it comes to the game’s integrity. Both McDaniels and Scarnecchia were members of the New England Patriots in the past and the club was found guilty of videotaping coaches of the New York Jets four seasons ago.

The league fined New England and their coach, Bill Belichick $750,000. The club’s first-round pick in the draft in 2008 was also stripped from them. Scarnecchia was a member of the Patriots from 2001 to 2005 and McDaniels worked for them between 2001 and 2009. When he moved to Denver almost two years ago he hired Scarnecchia.

The Broncos have been going through a brutal time of it over the last couple of seasons and have come out on the losing end of 15 of their last 20 games. This is their worst spell since 1971-72.
