DIAGNOSE THE BEARS DEFENSE

So what’s wrong with this defense? It’s easy to see that this unit has not been the same since Ron Rivera left town. Is it that he was a Super Bowl Bear that commanded respect and was also a more aggressive coordinator? Is it that Bob Babich is not a solid tactician, failing to make any adjustments? Is it that too many of the Bears’ players have their big money contracts?

It’s probably all of the above. But when you have Urlacher, Briggs, Ogunleye, Alex Brown, Mike Brown, Tillman and Vasher, you should be better than they are. The defense now looks more like it did during the Dick Jauron days–bend but don’t break and try to rely on turnovers. They are ranked right around the middle of the pack in most defensive stats.

I heard some of the Bears on the radio commenting that the lack of sacks is due in part to the quick three-step drops of the QBs the Bears have been playing. We’ll accept that. But if that is the case then why do the Bears’ DBs routinely play anywhere from 5 to 10 yards (and more) off the ball?

    Well, in my mind, the defense for the Bears has been pretty erratic. They’ve looked good at times, but some games they look pretty average. I think losing Vasher and Tillman really hurts what they want to do. Their safeties are just average now with Mike Brown being as slow as a mule after multiple knee injuries. And they don’t seem to be as deep in their defensive backfield anymore either.

    The majority of their big name defensive guys are on the downsides of their careers and that is also hurting them. It’s just not the dominant defense it once was. Good thing the offense is better this season.

    Don’t even try and tell my that Rivera has something to do with this. Rivera SUCKS! His vaunted defenses gave up an average of 24 points per game in the playoffs.

    The problem with this team is 1. lack of pressure and 2. URLACHER. Fifty-four has been sucking this season. I might even throw Brown and Harris under the bus. If it weren’t for Harris’ key sack this week he’s been non existent.

    Babs has to figure out how to get more from the front 4 and 54 has to get his head out of his arse. 16 tackles, no forced fumbles, no sacks, no interceptions in the last 3 games.

    Well you can say that about Rivera, but who is to say if he made the playoff schemes. He knows all the defenses. I’m guessing Babich doesn’t and it’s been said he is merely one of Lovie’s minions.

    The weird thing now is that they score more they can afford to take some chances on the defensive side of the ball.

    Good post. I’m wondering the same thing about the 3 step drop excuse? If that’s the case, why the 10 yard cushion everytime? Also, why no blitzes or line stunts to generate some more pressure on the QB. We all know the Cover 2 doesn’t work if you can not generate anything on the QB. The Bears D was blitzing, swarming, and amazing in Week 1 vs the Colts, why not bring some of that back into play? Babby and Lovie never make any adjustments, EVER!!! It’s killing the team. For once we have a capable offense that moves the ball, and we still barely win games and give up 41 pts? WTF???
