DODGERS SIGN JUAN PIERRE
Don’t they have a leadoff hitter already? Ned Colletti just went and spent a reported $44-45 million dollars on Juan Pierre, signing the speedy centerfielder for 5 years.
“This man gets on base an awful lot. He gets 200 hits or more, is a great guy on a club and, like Nomar, has great qualities as a human being.”, Colletti said.
I don’t think a man running a Major League ballclub should confuse ‘getting on-base a lot’ with OBP. Pierre does have a career OBP of .350. But he is also an out-machine. Pierre has walked only 118 times in the last 3 years but he has compiled over 2000 at-bats.
As for the great ‘human being qualities’ he possesses, we here in Chicago saw how much that rubbed off on the team last year: not at all.
Maybe Colletti is looking forward since Furcal has only 2 years left on his deal and he’ll still have a leadoff man. Maybe he’s trying to rebuild the ’82 Cardinals. Or maybe he just made a really bad deal.
