DON’T LET THE DOOR…

4

According to Paul Sullivan in today’s Tribune:

Several teams have courted Wood, including Boston, which wants him to be the primary right-handed setup man for closer Jonathan Papelbon.

The Cubs convinced Wood to take an incentive-laden one-year deal last November. But with so much interest on the market, they now will have to decide whether he’s worth the risk of a multiyear deal at around $5 million per year.

Um, no. He’s not. I’d rather have David Riske for that price, and he’d probably come cheaper anyway. Or I’d rather spend a few more bucks (OK a lot of bucks) and get Francisco Cordero. Could you imagine a bullpen with a back end of Marmol and Cordero? Wow!

Sullivan also writes that:

Hendry also is looking to sign Colorado infielder Kazuo Matsui to a three-year deal. He could use the left-handed hitter at both second base and shortstop.

Perhaps the Cubs brass doesn’t like Ryan Theriot as much as the fans do.

Do you really think the Cubs will add even more payroll before they’re sold in a few months? Their payroll is extremely high already, filled with some very long contracts. Wouldn’t adding more to it scare off some potential buyers?

BTW, Theriot’s offense fell off pretty dramatically in the last two months last season. I think he’s an average player at best. In fact, Infante may have been brought in to replace him.

Well, they just inked Wood to a 4 million dollar salary for one season. Guess they don’t really care about how much money they spend before selling. 4 million bucks for a guy whose pitched 90 innings over the past 3 seasons combined. Unbelievable.
