Good Morning, MLB Fans
There were 5 shutouts in baseball last night. But they were all of the new-age pitcher variety. Nobody went the full distance — not even Dusty’s guy! But let’s start in Pittsburgh.
Paul Maholm moved to 3-0 as the Pirates won their 3rd straight in beating Florida 7-4. That makes it a 3-game skid for the Fish. Adam LaRoche had 4 hits, including 3 doubles and an RBI. The Pirates have allowed the least amount of runs in the NL.
Josh Fields homered, doubled and drove in 3 as the White Sox drilled Baltimore 8-2. Jim Thome also homered for Chicago and John Danks was brilliant on the mound. Danks gave up just 4 hits and 1 run over 7 innings and improved to 2-0 with an 0.95 ERA.
Boston pounded on Scott Baker and the Twins winning 10-1. Nick Green and Kevin Youkilis homered, and JD Drew went 3-3 with 2 doubles. Tim Wakefield got the 7-innings complete game victory. The Red Sox are baseball’s hottest team. Last night was their 7th consecutive win.
CC, Evan, Junior, Granderson and more after the jump…
It took 14 innings, but the Yanks finally defeated the A’s 9-7. Oakland beat up CC Sabathia, who allowed 6 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 6 2/3 innings. Melky Cabrera had 2 home runs, his second to win the game in the bottom of the 14th. Jose Veras struck out 4 over 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
Evan Longoria was 3-4 with 3 RBI and Carl Crawford was 4-5 and 3 runs scored as the Rays pounded on Seattle 9-3. Longoria is hitting .415. The Mariners are 9-6, but their 3-4 combo of Ken Griffey Jr. and Adrian Beltre isn’t hitting. Junior is hitting just .171; Beltre just .172. Beltre hasn’t homered yet and Junior has drive in only 2 runs.
The Tigers’ big bats saved Justin Verlander from a loss as Detroit beat the Angels 12-10. The Tigers had 18 hits, including homers from Curtis Granderson and Brandon Inge. It was the 5th for each of them. Kendry Morales homered and had 5 RBI for the Angels. Verlander is now 0-2 and has allowed 21 runs in 21 innings.
Rod Barajas homered in his first 2 at-bats and Kevin Millar had 3 hits — including the game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th as the Jays beat Texas 8-7 . The 7-8-9 hitters for Toronto went 9-16 and scored 6 times.
