GRIFFEY HOMERS AS SOX KEEP ROLLING
The best home run hitting team in the majors finally got a home run from one of the best home run hitters in history.
It took 46 at-bats, but Ken Griffey Jr. roped one into the seats off Mariners pitcher R.A. Dickey. I like what he had to say afterward. “I don’t really worry about that,” Griffey said. “Everybody else does. I’m more concerned about getting hits and getting on base. You get hits and home runs happen. But it is good to get the first one at home.”
The Sox beat Seattle 15-3. They have won 5 straight and lead the Twins by one game. Only the Rangers and Cubs have scored more runs than the Sox, who now have 4 players with 20 or more homers after Nick Swisher homered off Tim Corcoran. Alexei Ramirez hit his 14th, so it could be 5 players with 20 or more before the season ends.
Griffey also tied Sammy Sosa for 5th all-time with 609 homers. “It’s weird. I’ve watched Sammy throughout the years. Tying him, it’s OK, I guess.” Could that be read as a dig? Maybe.
The Sox welcome the 1st place Rays to Chicago for a 3-games set beginning Friday. They are 3-4 against the Rays this year.
