HENDRY STILL HAS WORK TO DO
It was one collective “Whuh?” from the city of Chicago when the news came down that Carlos Marmol would be replacing Kerry Wood on the NL All-Star team. Wood has a blister and will not be able to pitch.
Marmol has been torched since the calendar turned to June. Before then he was most worthy of being named to the NL squad. It’s a shot of confidence and boost of ego for Marmol, to be sure. But will a good outing in the game restore him to the pre-June Marmol? If he is rocked by the AL squad does the spiral pick up speed? Time will tell. You’d think if anyone needed a few days off it was Marmol.
The bigger issue is that it’s clear Jim Hendry’s work is not yet finished. Wood, as I recall, has had blister issues before. And he is Kerry Wood. Marmol’s funk is still in overdrive. So the question is: Rich Hill to what team for which veteran reliever? Cleveland, Seattle, KC are certain sellers in the AL. Washington and San Diego in the NL. So who will it be?
