Interesting stuff from Dan Pompeii on former Bear Bernard Berrian. Some of it was surprising to read.

I had no idea that Berrian’s massive contract from the Vikings “made him the 10th-highest-paid wide receiver” in the league. Do you think he’ll be the 10th best receiver in the league? Here’s a quick ten that I believe will be better than him in 2008: Owens, Fitzgerald, Moss, Houshmandzadeh, Roddy White, Braylon Edwards, Colston, Burress, Brandon Marshall, Boldin.

“Bernard is something we wanted to add—vertical speed and playmaking after the catch,” Vikings vice president Rick Spielman said of the player he guaranteed $16 million. “Besides [ Randy] Moss, he was the next-best vertical guy on the market. So it was taking a good player from a division rival. We were willing to go out and get him.”

Than I can understand overpaying him some. But this also caught my attention:

“He’s a lot tougher than I gave him credit for,” Childress said. “Certainly he is a talented guy who can stretch the field, but he has a good feel for shallow crosses and slants too.”

I can’t find stats on dropped passes but I remember Berrian being one of the main culprits on a Bears team that dropped a lot last year. And as I recall they were mostly on those types of routes. It will be interesting to see if Berrian becomes the multi-faceted receiver the Bears thought he could be.

“Before free agency, Spielman consulted with Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. He asked Frazier if he had to adjust the Vikings’ scheme for Berrian when they played the Bears. The answer was yes.

Vikings opponents will be more reluctant to adjust their schemes for Berrian because of the presence of Rookie of the Year running back Adrian Peterson.”

Makes sense. But we’ll see. With such an incredible run game and o-line, Berrian should get 10 TDs, right? I guess we’ll find out if Berrian was held back as a Bear.

Not even in the top 20. He’s never even cracked 1000 yards in a season or been near 10tds. He’s just another average WR. Dude, how can you not have Reggie Wayne in your top 10? FIRE MILLEN MANG! !

I was just rattling off names. Wayne is obviously up there. And your boy Roy!

Roddy White???? He isn’t in my top 25. And I don’t think Brandon Marshall deserves top 10 status yet either. Andre Johnson, Steve Smith and Torry Holt are all better…at least until the younger dudes show me more.

I didn’t say top 10. I said I could name 10 better than Berrian. Marshall is awesome, both physically and statistically. He caught 102 balls for 1325 yards and 7 TDs in his 2nd season. I’d say he’s a top 10 guy.

White had over 80 catches for almost 15 yards a pop. How he did that on that team with those QBs is beyond me. He had Leftwich, Redman and Joey Ballgame as his QBs. He had more catches of 20+ yards than all but 4 of the receivers in the NFL. The guy is a stud.

    Very well then.

Oh, BTW, since you apparently don’t follow college sports, just a note to your readers. Missouri is ranked in the top 5 in the country and is a legit national title contender this season. They play Illinois (who is a top 25 team right now) on Saturday night in prime time! Figures to be one of the better games to kick off the college football season.

Berrian is not close to being a top 10 WR. I’m glad we didn’t overpay for him. I heard JA say it was Berrian or Briggs. Good choice to go with Briggs. Although I can’t tell this pre-season. The defense sucked giving up 100 pts in 4 games…. sweet.

I still don’t understand why we over paid for Gould but that’s another question.
