From ESPN:

The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.

The Broncos confirmed the move.

To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.

To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back an undisclosed draft choice in a later round.

This is awesome! I’m so stoked. The Bears finally have a bonafide gunner at the QB position. Now they need to go sign Pace and with the their 2nd round pick draft the best WR on the board.

I am glad he went to the Bears, but did they give up too much to get him? I thought maybe a first and a third

  • http://zonersports.com The Zoner

Maybe in theory, but when you have a chance to get a talent like that, you go for it.

  • PV

Zoner, I keep waiting for somebody to say Bill Buckner is part of this.

    There’s no way it’s too much to pay – for a potential franchise QB – who’s 25 (!!!)

Still stunned. How much fun is this going to be?

  • http://zonersports.com Zoner

YES! Who cares about the draft picks? An 18 this year, a likely later one next year. So what?

  • dhaab

I’m already giddy in anticipation of Bears fans with hopes WAY too high for this team. But I’m not saying this was a bad trade. I just think some folks think Cutler is already a franchise QB and I disagree. And the Bears lack of quality receivers ain’t going to help.

Bottom line for me is they gave up a lot of high draft picks and I’m not sure they can fill them without those picks.

As for Orlando Pace, I’m a Rams fan and you can have him. He’s a shell of the player he used to be.

  • dhaab

I find it hilarious that Bears fans don’t care about draft picks now.
Remember the Herschel Walker trade? LOL

  • http://zonersports.com The Zoner

Who says we don’t care? I just would trade an 18, a 23 or so and Orton for a QB the caliber of Cutler.

And most observers seem to think Pace has plenty left. It will also help that he will be playing for a better team. Same thing happened when Ruben Brown and Fred Miller came here– gave em a little kick in the pants.

  • PB

This is a stunner mang! Angleo pulled this right out of his rear end. Giving up the 1st rounders for the next two years isn’t a big deal. The Bears usually screw up on draft day anyway. Will this make Hester into a good receiver? Nope. He sucks. But they should be able to land a veteran dude from somewhere else a whole lot easier. [LOVIE]Jay is our quarterback[/LOVIE] FIRE FORD MANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111

  • http://zonersports.com Zoner

That’s another aspect to the deal- the Lie-downs and the Vi-queens didn’t get him. That’s huge.

  • dhaab

Most observers? I just saw the details of the contract. He’s getting 15 million for 3 years! Now I know the Bears can waive him at any time, but 5 million bucks a year for Pace??? Wow. Good luck with that. Again, I don’t think he’s washed up, but he’s had a slew of major injuries over the years and he just doesn’t block like he used to.

And I find it rather ballsy to just assume the Bears 1st round pick will be the 23rd overall pick in two years. In the words of Amy Poehler…REALLY?

Seriously, I can’t wait for the NFL season already.

  • dhaab

    Oh, and I almost forgot.
You asked me “Who says we don’t care about the draft picks”? To be precise, YOU said you didn’t care about the draft picks in post #4.

  • Dean

It’s amazing how some fans and analysts focus on the first round picks as a potential issue in this deal. Besides Urlacher in 2000 and maybe (gulp) Tommie Harris (forget the 90′s), they’ve done miserable with first round draft picks. Greg Olsen may develop into top-tier tight end, but the jury is still out. You know at #18, the Bears and Angelo would have messed that pick up and I think the Bears (even with Orton) would have a lower first round pick next year. Even if Cutler is just average this season, Forte will definitely benefit because defenses will have to respect the passing game. I guarantee you wont see 8 or more guys in the box with Cutler back there. Yeah, they seriously need to bolster their receiving corps, but to get a 25 year old pro bowler and someone who isnt afraid to throw down field is key for this organization.

  • http://www.sharapovasthigh.com Matt Clapp

Pace allowed only 2 sacks last year, he’s still a terrific pass blocker. His run blocking is declining, but maybe going from a cemetery of a team to a contending team will motivate him a bit. Regardless, the line now has great depth, something that was a major issue just a couple weeks ago. They also came into this week with what, 30 million to spend? They’re still in great shape with the cap. Amazing day to be a Bears fan.

  • PB

Zoner, I don’t think the Lions were a real threat in landing Cutler. The Bears don’t have nearly the amount of holes to plug as the Lions. The Lions giving up 2 firsts and a third would have accomplished nothing. In fact it probably would have been devistating. They need serious help on both the defensive and offensive lines, which they will need to do through good drafting. Now that Millen is gone, perhaps that can happen. That said, a lot of Lions fans are glad they didn’t make a move. Personally I think the management of the Lions didn’t see enough upside in a deal to land Cutler. I hope they’re right. FIRE FORD MANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • dhaab

It’s funny. If you compare the 2008 numbers of Cutler and Orton next to each other. They’re not that remarkably different.

And the whole Bears fans argument that Angelo will just screw up the first round picks anyway is an absolute joke. Talk about an entire fan base falling all over themselves to try and make a trade look better than it is.

Bottom line is Angelo put a bunch of his chips in for this one player. It’s a ballsy move and one that could pay off big for the Bears. But there is also a possibility that it will hurt this organization going forward. I realize Bears fans don’t want to see that side of it, but it’s very possible.

  • http://zonersports.com The Zoner

So before you “LOL”d at the Orton is a solid NFL QB but now his numbers are similar to that of Cutler? Give it up.

  • PB

One of the funniest things I’ve heard so far about this trade was from Dan Hampton:

“This takes the Bears from a C minus team to one of the top 5 in the NFL.” I didn’t know that Hampton was a comedian. FIRE FORD MANG!!!!!!!!!11

  • dhaab

I laughed about Orton being a solid QB BEFORE the season began. He proved himself very capable of being a solid QB this year. Is he a star? No, but he’s definitely a solid player who can run an offense efficiently.

Honestly, I just think of all the times in the Bears history of BAD QB’s, this was a strange time to make a risky trade for a different QB. Of all the holes in the Bears team right now, QB wasn’t one of the bigger ones. I think it would have made much more sense to go after a great WR like Boldin.

I agree with you PB about some of the talking heads on Chicago sports radio. A few weeks ago most of them were talking about this team being in a rebuilding phase and now suddenly after they get one talented QB, they’re one of the best teams in football. HILARIOUS!

  • mike mang

hey, why not snatch up Marvelous Marvin Harrison ? He still has some steel in his legs, and can teach the bears boys a lot in the process.

  • Adkins

Is this the Mike Mang from Triton Centra H.S. class of 74?

  • http://zonersports.com Zoner

    Nope, sorry mang.
