ON KIMBO AND GUS
The world of MMA is in a tizzy over Kimbo Slice’s loss to Seth Petruzelli, a quick knockout just seconds into the fight. Gus Johnson compared Petruzelli to Rocky and called the win “the most incredible victory in the history of mixed martial arts.” That’s odd. I didn’t even consider it an upset. I thought Shamrock was going to beat Kimbo, and once I heard Petruzelli was the replacement, I was very confident Kimbo would lose, save a good fixing.
Zoner Sports’ resident MMA expert Don Abato: “All the Kimbo fans are obviously new to MMA and think the fight was fixed. I came across some posts on UG. They need to look up the term ‘Flash Knockout’.”
Speaking of Johnson, as much as I love him doing college hoops, he simply has to try too hard to do a quality broadcast on the Elite programs. They’re saying much of the same at Awful Announcing, where they have much love for Gus.
He had several miscalls on different holds and you can tell he is thinking way too hard before speaking. It’s sore-thumby at best, and painful to listen to at times.
Mauro Ranallo is simply the best at calling MMA–his voice, enthusiasm, knowledge are second to none and he even makes his corny metaphors work and generate laughs.
Johnson is superfluous on the telecast. He’s just not needed there. Says Don Abato: “Although it’s still disappointing, I thought Gus would grow into a good MMA announcer after his 1st outing, which wasn’t bad for a debut. Oh well.” Oh well is what I was saying after Johnson told us Petruzelli was from Fort Myers for the 9th time.
As for Shamrock getting his shot at Kimbo? Might have to take a backseat to a rematch.
