Props to the Delicate Genius, [tag]Tony La Russa[/tag] for making a statement owning up to his fault.

“Last night’s situation is the opposite of feeling good. It was an embarrassment, so I apologize to anyone who is close to me, members of the Cardinals organization, our fans. I regret it, take responsibility, and I’m not sure there is anything else I can say.”

But some of the reaction is disturbing.

When La Russa walked onto the field before Thursday’s game, many fans stood and applauded.

Whuh? Yay! You drive drunk! Let’s applaud! I know they were likely just showing support. But I wouldn’t have done it. Then there’s this gem from [tag]Ozzie Guillen[/tag]:

“He’s human,” Guillen said. “He’s not the only one it has happened to. Thank God it doesn’t happen to me. … You’re not invisible. Tony is a great ambassador for this game.”

Does that mean Guillen drives drunk? Those 2 reactions show how we as a society really feel about [tag]drunk driving[/tag]. It’s OK, everyone does it, he’s human, we all make mistakes. We still don’t take it seriously enough.

LOL – was that a malaprop from Ozzie, “You’re not invisible”? Instead of invincible?

And, yes, drunk drivers shouldn’t get a standing o – just wrong.

He did make a mistake. It isn’t worthy of applause for admitting it. And drunk driving is a serious issue. It shows how forgiving sports fans really are.

Geez, some of you folks need to stop reading into things so much. Carol Slezak wrote the exact same story in Sunday’s Sun Times. I think what you two are missing is that these fans aren’t applauding what La Russa did, they are offering their support of him because they think he is a good man who made a mistake. Maybe you could look at it from that perspective and it might make more sense.

Um yeah, I wrote that in the post.
