LET THE CHICAGO FREAKOUT BEGIN IN EARNEST
No, it won’t reach us here at Zoner Sports. But you know what’s creeping into–or fully infesting–the minds of Cubs fans today. Here we go again.
The Cubs lost their 4th straight on Tuesday, Carlos Zambrano left early because of his arm and Kerry Wood took the loss when Geoff Blum hit an extra-inning homerun ala the one he hit for the Sox in the 2005 World Series. Ugh.
Let me be the one to inject a bit of reason into the situation, though I admit the history of this ballclub is far from reasonable. First off, they are still 31 games over .500 and Milwaukee lost again. They remain 4.5 up in the Central. The wildcard, while not a mortal lock, looks to be Cubbie blue even if they somehow lose the division lead.
But…if you really want to wig out consider the remainder of the schedule. They finish with Houston at home tonight. Then out of their remaining 22 games only 6 will be at Wrigley. The opponents are a bit scary too:
- 3 @ Cincy
- 3 @ STL
- 3 @ Hou.
- 3 vs. Milw.
- 3 vs. STL
- 4 @ NYM
- 3 @ Milw.
Breathe through your nose, Chicago.
