MARINERS TRADE FOR VIDRO
The Mariners have acquired Jose Vidro from the Nats for Chris Snelling, whose position is mostly 15-day DLer, and young, wild Emiliano Fruto. I once again defer to Keith Law, who absolutely nails it:
Jose Vidro is an old 33: His knees are shot, he can’t play the field anymore, and his power is gone. He’ll be one of the worst designated hitters in the American League, and he just bumped a superior hitter, Ben Broussard, out of that role.
Vidro has played in only 126, 87 and 110 games during the last 3 seasons. And Broussard was pounding the ball before he came to Seattle last year. His numbers wilted during the 2nd half but he still totaled 21 HRs and hit .289/.331/.484.
“They need my bat. They need it bad,” Vidro said Monday by telephone from his native Puerto Rico.
Perhaps. But they need it in someone else’s hands. Like Broussard.
