A while back I wrote about bad contracts around baseball. Included in those was Gary Matthews Jr., who I said was one of the highest paid reserve outfielders in the game. Maybe Matthews is just realizing this now. From the LA Times:

Disgruntled outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. was given permission to leave camp for a day today after being told in a closed-door meeting with Manager Mike Scioscia and General Manager Tony Reagins that he would open the season as the Angels’ fifth outfielder.

Matthews had a solid spring with 5 extra-base hits in just 31 ABs. Rivera had an awful spring and wasn’t anything special in 2008. So maybe that’s where part of Matthews’ beef comes from. But to leave camp for a day when you are being paid $10 million? Suck it up, man.

I’ll take $10 to sit on a padded bench, tour the US, get free eats and a baseball rat here or there. Poor Matthews…

At least Matthews Jr. wants to play. I give him credit for that. Some players would be satisfied with making good coin and just cruise.

Conspicuously absent from this discussion is one Kusoke Fukodome. He’s presently hitting .091 this spring and will STILL get some weekly starts in the Cubs outfield this upcoming season. I believe he’s pulling in $13 million this season. I find it rather disingenuous to see a Cubs fan railing on a player like Matthews when the Northsiders have an overpaid albatross on their roster as well. But I digress. :)

If Fukudome was to leave camp I would be the first to harp on it.

And I’ll take our albatross over theirs.

Well, I’m sure we’ll never see an Asian player walk out on a team. That kind of thing isn’t accepted in their culture.
Ryne Sandberg wasn’t Asian. (sorry, i couldn’t pass it up) :)
