MATTHEWS JR. NOT A HAPPY ANGEL
A while back I wrote about bad contracts around baseball. Included in those was Gary Matthews Jr., who I said was one of the highest paid reserve outfielders in the game. Maybe Matthews is just realizing this now. From the LA Times:
Disgruntled outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. was given permission to leave camp for a day today after being told in a closed-door meeting with Manager Mike Scioscia and General Manager Tony Reagins that he would open the season as the Angels’ fifth outfielder.
Matthews had a solid spring with 5 extra-base hits in just 31 ABs. Rivera had an awful spring and wasn’t anything special in 2008. So maybe that’s where part of Matthews’ beef comes from. But to leave camp for a day when you are being paid $10 million? Suck it up, man.
