Monday Night Football Week 11: Denver Broncos vs San Diego Chargers
Week 11 of the NFL season wraps up on Monday Night, Nov. 22nd, as the Denver Broncos travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers. The Broncos sit fourth in the AFC West Division with a 3-6 record while the Chargers sit one spot ahead of them at 4-5. San Diego’s won two in a row and Denver won their last game. But San Diego’s just 2-3 in their last five and Denver’s 1-4.
If San Diego has any chance of winning its fifth consecutive AFC West championship it has to win this game, which features the league’s top two passers in the Chargers’ Philip Rivers and the Broncos’ Kyle Orton. In fact, both of them could possibly break the single-season record for passing yards of 5,084 which was set by Dan Marino back in 1984. Rivers has an NFL best of 2,944 yards at the moment while Orton is right behind him at 2,806. So this could end up being a pretty high-scoring game on Monday night.
This is close to a must-win game for both teams if they want to make the playoffs as Kansas City and Oakland top the West Division with records of 5-4. San Diego is a game back while Denver is two behind. And while San Diego has won two in a row, they’re 0-2 in their own division. Another loss to a division rival could be deadly. San Diego had a bye last week last week while Denver smoked Kansas City 59-29.
The Chargers could see wide receivers Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naanee back from their hamstring injuries for the game. Naanee sat out the past four games while Floyd has missed the past three. However, tight end Antonio Gates might miss the game and they’ll miss him as his nine TD catches are tied for the league’s best. Gates received a foot injury on Nov. 7th. Denver’s kept Gates in check lately though as he hasn’t scored a touchdown against them in his past five contests with them.
Denver quarterback Orton is coming off a career-best four-touchdown pass performance against Kansas last week and hopes to keep it up against San Diego. One of his favourite receivers is Brandon Lloyd, who leads the NFL this season with 968 receiving yards. He also tops the league with 15 receptions of at least 25 yards. Denver’s defensive tackle Jamal Williams is also having a good season so far after spending 12 years with the Chargers.
San Diego and Denver have played each other twice a year over the past two seasons and have won two each. Before that, the Chargers beat the Broncos four consecutive times.
For San Diego, Steve Gregory, Ryan Mathews, Antonio Gates, Kris Wilson, and Travis Johnson could all possibly miss the match with injuries. As for Denver, Jamal Williams, Andre’ Goodman, Robert Ayers, Darcel McBath, and Eddie Royal could be out.
