The DVD contains some slick bonus materials including animated trivia cards for each of the boxers, featurettes that look at the fighters and their experiences with Ali, the making of the film and the unique way this book was adapted for the screen as well as the process used to restore and upgrade the archival fight footage to HD quality.

If you’re looking for a way to use those holiday gift cards, “Facing Ali” would be a good choice.

It took a while but I finally watched the greatness that is Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood”. Seeing as I am late to the party there is no need for dissection or the like; it’s simply an incredible film. That said, I have questions.

– How in the world did this not win Best Picture? How did it not win Best Director? There’s no doubt that the Coen Bros.’ “No Country For Old Men” is a cinematic gem. But I cannot believe it was a better film, or more deserving of awards then TWBB. Perhaps the world of film has again proven itself like that of sports; they occasionally mete out awards based on lifetime achievement.

– Has an actor of this era ever had such a dominant triumvirate of performances like Daniel Day-Lewis in TWBB, Gangs of New York and In the Name of the Father? Or you could substitute “My Left Foot” as a wild card. Who are the best actors of our generation and do any of them have a better top 3 than DDL? I’ll have to consider that.

Great story in today’s Tribune about young Christian Hanson, the junior defenseman on the Irish hockey team. His dad just happens to be Dave Hanson, from the hilarious movie “Slap Shot”.

“His father, playing with the World Hockey Association’s Birmingham Bulls in the mid-1970s, was about to square off on the ice with Bobby Hull, the Golden Jet himself. Preparing to throw a punch, Hanson’s father grabbed the top of Hull’s head, then abruptly lost his grip.

Seconds later, Dave “Killer” Hanson realized he had a fistful of Hull’s toupee.”

Great article about both father and son. Christian Hanson will be playing in the Frozen Four for the Irish. Maybe like Eddie Shore.

Valued reader PV and I always joke that when it’s a slow sports day, sports radio yakkers inevitably turn to the old standby topic–best sports movies. Funny thing is it never gets old.

So I present another list, this time courtesy of a sports fan who is also a movie critic. Metromix Tv’s Marcus Leshock offers his thoughts and clips here. I wrote that one omission I saw is the tear-jerker “Bang the Drum Slowly” with Robert DeNiro.

And go ahead and laugh, but I actually really enjoyed “For the Love of the Game” with Kevin Costner.
