Let me get to another issue that has popped up recently with the Cubs. Apparently, they are going to make Ryan Dempster a starter again. I don’t have a strong opinion one way or the other as to where Demp would be more effective, the pen or the rotation. Or if he’ll be effective in either role. But I do have an opinion on his taking the place of someone he will not be better than next year: Sean Marshall. Now that it would be Marshall might be up for debate. It could be Marquis, which would be another bone to pick with Hendry.

But assume it is Marshall. He had a breakout year in 2007. He a big lefty and only 25 years old. Does anyone think Ryan Dempster will make it to 180 innings as a starter? I don’t. And if he did, I doubt he would be as effective as Marshall.

These are the kinds of decisions that drive baseball fans nuts. Marshall is grown in your system, has shown progress and likely has better days still ahead. Make Dempster one of the set-up guys and bring in a closer or move Marmol into that slot.

    Don’t faint here, Zoner, but I agree. Dempster probably won’t last long as a starter and Marshall is a young guy who can give you some quality starts in the 5th spot in the rotation.

    The latest rumor is the Cubs acquiring Carl Crawford for Marmol and Hill. I know this probably won’t happen, but if there is any validity to it, I would be shocked. Why would Hendry trade his two young, stud pitchers away? I realize Crawford is a great player, but young pitchers who are as talented as Marmol and Hill don’t exactly grow on trees. And what wins in baseball every time?? Pitching.

    I think Carl Crawford is a good player, not a great player. But he has speed and is only 26–which is incredible as it seems he’s been playing for so long. I like him, but I don’t know that I’d trade either of them straight up for Crawford, let alone in a package.

    However if it was Murton and a pitching prospect, bring it on. Murton will end up getting screwed again in ’08 by the Cubs anyway.

    BTW, tell Howard Griffith I really enjoyed him filling in on ESPN 1000. He’s fun and he knows what he’s talking about. He could totally do that gig full-time.

    Howard is a GREAT guy. I’ve had a beer with him a few times now and he has no attitude at all.

    He started pretty slowly here, but definitely grew into the analyst role quite well. He and Gerry Dinardo have done an excellent job for BTN this football season.

    Did they finish up the construction on Dempster? I sure hate taking Touhy across to the Edens. FIRE MILLEN MANG! LIONS WILL BE 6-5 SOON!
