ORIOLES OVERSPEND AGAIN
It didn’t take long for the Orioles to make fools of themselves again. After signing Jamie Walker to an excessive deal, they went back out and signed Danys Baez to a 3-year, $19 million deal. Just insane.
So the Orioles are giving over $10 million to 2 middle relievers next year. That seems more than silly to me.
“Danys gives us a strong right arm to add to our bullpen,” said Mike Flanagan, executive vice president for baseball operations. “We’ve said the bullpen was a target area for us, and this signing and last week’s addition of Jamie Walker have greatly improved our ability to hold leads and get to our closer.”
Ah. But you also need to improve your ability to get leads. They might have recently traded away a better reliever in Chris Britton, who they dealt to obtain the services of the great Jaret Wright.
Baltimore was 17th in MLB in runs scored last year and 10th in the AL. You’d think middle relief would be the least of their worries. That’s not to say they shouldn’t address it; but to throw that much money at it? Pony up a few more mill and they could have had Soriano or Carlos Lee.
