OWENS NEEDS THE BEASTIES
Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken then I ate his leg.- “Egg Man”, Beastie Boys
Jerry Owens of the White Sox needs to check some Beastie Boys science. He’s a little mixed up. Maybe he’s seen “Major League” too many times. Too much Willie Mays Hayes. He likes those stolen bases.
“My goal is 65 this year,” Owens said Tuesday after arriving at the
“Every year I’ve improved my stolen base total. I had 56 last year combined (with the Sox and Triple-A Charlotte), and this year it’s 65.”
Owens is 27 and has only 365 MLB at-bats. So he is a bit old to be considered a prospect. But he could help the Sox. Stolen bases are great. Getting on-base is more important; hence the Beasties’ quote. Owens OBP was a lowly .324 last year for the Sox in 350+ at-bats. He drew only 27 walks while whiffing 63 times. That is unacceptable for someone who wants to be the leadoff hitter.
I don’t know if Owens will be the starter or the 4th or even 5th outfielder. My guess is since he is 27 and hasn’t played much in the bigs, the Sox probably aren’t that high on him. They were trying to sign Torii Hunter and they went out and got Swisher and Carlos Quentin. But it would be nice if he said that his goal is to get on-base more rather than just steal bases. Because he stole 32 last year and he wasn’t given the job. That should tell him something. He’s got to get on-base before he can steal them.
