PRIOR OUT FOR ALL OF 2007

3

And yet another twist in the Mark Prior saga. In spring training he declared himself ready to go and start the year on the big club. Now we have word he is done for the year.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs this afternoon issued the following update on right-handed pitcher Mark Prior:

Mark Prior yesterday underwent successful right shoulder arthroscopy performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, AL. During the arthroscopy, Dr. Andrews performed a debridement of Mark’s right rotator cuff as well as repair of labral and capsular injuries in his right shoulder.

Mark today began a comprehensive rehabilitation program in Birmingham overseen by Dr. Andrews and the Cubs medical staff.

Mark will not pitch in 2007 and will continue his rehabilitation program into the offseason.

Good. Good that perhaps there really was something wrong with his shoulder that was previously undetected, and good that we won’t have the up/down is he healthy or not conversations. At least until next year. Has anyone ever heard of a ‘debridement’ before?

Definitely a tough break for Cubs fans. Prior and Wood had so much potential, but they seem to have left most of it at the doctor’s office. This news reminds me of a fictitious headline from The Onion, I believe. It said something to the effect that the Disabled List had re-signed Mark Prior to a two year contract extension. Funny stuff then (and now), but more prophetic than I’m sure Cub fans had hoped.

Debribement is the process of removing material in the surgical area. In Priors case there is stuff that is buit up in the rotator area. In a real sense they go in and carve out the material. Let’s face it, his career is over. I think Prior and Wood would have been traded if anyone would have offered anything (including a new batboy) to the Cubbies.
