Is today the day the Cubs finally acquire Brian Roberts? Yesterday local sports yakker ESPN 1000 reported that Roberts was on his way to Chicago for at least three players. It made sense that the Cubs would complete the trade as they signed veteran pitcher and once again Cub Jon Lieber. (Memo to Lou- Lefties kill Lieber).

These rumors are getting out of hand and I am certainly guilty of buying into them prematurely. Hendry denied the trade was imminent.

But there is reason to celebrate with the signing of Lieber. I’m confident he has one more solid season in him and he’s the last 20 game winner the Cubs have had. He was always well liked in these parts. It also means that most likely Ryan Dempster will be back in the pen. I don’t think he is a closer or a starter, so if he gets slated as a set-up man with Howry and Wood, that would be optimal. I say Howry and Wood because I do not believe that Wood will close. It will be Marmol sooner rather than later.

If the Roberts trade goes down, I hope Kevin Hart is not one of the Cubs shipped to Baltimore. And I also hope it’s not Sean Marshall as that would likely mean Dempster is back in the rotation. Maybe the Cubs don’t want 3 lefty starters.

Whatever the case, the Cubs added a solid veteran pitcher and that never hurts.

As a Cub fan I this hope trade is made as soon as possible if its going to happen.

I agree with you on all points here Zoner. I was hoping that as Leiber became available that the Cubs would consider adding him for some depth, experience, and some quality starts. He had a nice run at Wrigley last time, although his ERA is higher than what makes me comfortable.
I hope the Roberts deal gets done before the end of next week. It would be nice to have all things in place well before heading to Arizona.

On another note, this makes me want to vomit expletives:

Yeah, maybe the Orioles will just GIVE the Cubs Roberts. LOL
