ROCKIES, RED SOX QUIT TALKING HELTON
According to the Worldwide Leader, the Rockies and the Red Sox are done–for now–talking about a potential Todd Helton trade.
Rockies owner Charlie Monfort:
“This is Todd Helton we’re talking about. We’re not just going to give him up for nothing.”
The Rocks were trying to pry Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarmen from the Sox to go with Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez.
Meanwhile, after looking at Helton’s recent numbers, I might consider making that trade without the prospects.
Helton turns 34 this year and makes almost $17 million. He signed that massive 9 year- $141 million deal that runs through 2011. And while those particulars might not scare off potential suitors, especially the BoSox, maybe the following numbers would:
2004- 1.089, 32 HRs, .320 BA
2005- .979, 20 HRs, .320 BA
2006- .880, 15 HRs, .302 BA
And over the course of 3 years, Todd Helton has morphed into…Mark Grace. These days whenever you see such a dramatic dropoff it’s hard not to think about the big elephant in baseball’s room–roids. Helton was once accused of taking roids, although that was later retracted.
I suppose if Boston wanted the Rocks to take on some of that massive contract the luster wears off the deal a bit. Otherwise, aging 1st basemen who hit 15 homers certainly aren’t worth $17 million per season and it’s best to get something for them while you can.
