SAMARDZIJA CALLED UP TO AAA

8

Color me puzzled. Jeff Samardzija has been called up to AAA by the Cubs.

“Samardzija, who signed a $10 million deal in 2007, was 3-5 with a 4.86 ERA at Double-A Tennessee.

“His last five outings have been real good,” said Oneri Fleita, Cubs vice president of player personnel, referring to Samardzija’s 2.63 ERA since he was sent to the bullpen for one appearance.”

He still is a flyball pitcher that lacks control (44k/42BB). He has a few good starts and he’s promoted? What’s the hurry? Does being in AAA boost his trade value? Could he be part of the puzzle for Sabathia?

    Color you stupid.
The kid has the ability and mental toughness to be an elite pitcher. It’s not like they just sent him up to Wrigley to start game 7! Its just a shot at AAA ball. He throws gas at 97mph and just gets guys out. Doesnt matter how or what ratio you look at. Also before you start yapping about the Shark please know your material. “Boost his trade value”, if you knew your info before you started pounding the keys, you would know Samardzja has a no trade clause…

Thanks for stopping by. A few things:

What’s most telling about your comment is that your e-mail has “ND” in it.

And yes, we all know that he has the no-trade clause. That doesn’t mean he can’t be traded, especially if it meant getting to the bigs sooner somewhere else.

It’s wonderful that he can throw 97 mph. When he can locate it I’ll get excited about that.

If you were a such a “Shark” guy, I’d think you’d want him to stay in AA and develop. If he is indeed starting to get it, why move him up now? See if he can sustain that through the end of the year. He’s not needed at Wrigley, as you say. This is a typical Cubs rushing a prospect move, and those 10 million dollars might have something to do with it.

Finally, enjoy your 4-7 season in 2008-2009!

Ah, so I see. All the hostility is infact due to The Shark being from Notre Dame. Wow. Give the kid a break. He’s on the same team now.

Why get him out of TN? Because it was a crappy team. Get Samardzja somewhere that he doesnt have to throw a 1 or 2 run game in order to get a W. Its called building confidence in a young prospect.

Additionally how are they rushing him? There was a spot, and in his last 5 starts he has been lights out. Therefore he earned it. He hasn’t been rushed to Wrigley yet. Plenty of time left.

This has nothing to do with ND football.

How are they rushing him? He hasn’t pitched a full year of ball at any level, and struggled at both A & AA. Because a guy has a few good starts—long overdue good starts–you don’t move him up a level. That’s not how you build confidence–it’s how you destroy it. And I hope I am dead wrong.

In the words of the great Ron Burgundy, “Agree to disagree”.

Yeah, this is THE guy who will get the Indians to trade Sabathia to the Cubs.
HAAHHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!! Sorry, but that is hilarious.

And to WrigleyRon who obviously has no bias in his opinion ;) , just because a pitcher has a few decent starts doesn’t mean he’s ready to be promoted to AAA.

Here’s the most telling part of this. Of the four starting pitchers who have made at least nine starts for double-A Tennessee (Donald Veal, Mitch Atkins, and James Russell being the others), Samardzija has the highest ERA at 4.86. Samardzija’s 44/42 K/BB ratio is also poor. Veal, on the other hand, has a 2.82 ERA. Atkins has pitched the most innings on the team and has a 72/24 K/BB ratio.

The actual phrasing was: “Could he be part of the puzzle for Sabathia?”

  • dhaab

I know. I overreacted. But you just mentioning his name as a trade chip for Sabathia was too hilarious to pass up. It shows just how little top line talent the Cubs have in their minor league system right now.

Heh heh. I know. They have a collection of maybes in Patterson, Pie, Murton, the Shark and Veal. Their last 2 first round picks are doing well either.
