Sammy Sosa is ready to play in the bigs again. Now he just needs a phone call.

“I still don’t have an offer, and I shouldn’t be looking for offers out there. Any team who wants to sign me should have the initiative and make an offer.”

Sosa added that he’s still in good physical shape in hopes of making a comeback to professional baseball. “Those who saw me training know that I’m hitting the ball with the usual authority. I just hope to get the chance to prove that I’m still a threat,” said Sosa at a charity event sponsored by his foundation.

In his last MLB season Sosa hit 21 homers to go with 25 other XBHs in just over 400 ABs. Overall he batted .252/.311/.468. He just turned 40 in November.

Sosa is hardly the sideshow he used to be. Will we see him again? According to the ESPN depth charts, here is a list of the current starters at DH:

  • Frank Catalanotto, Texas
  • Ryan Freel, Baltimore
  • David Ortiz, Boston
  • Jim Thome, Chicago
  • Travis Hafner, Cleveland
  • Gary Sheffield, Detroit
  • Billy Butler, Kansas City
  • Vlad Guerrero, Los Angeles
  • Jason Kubel, Minnesota
  • Hideki Matsui, New York
  • Jack Cust, Oakland
  • Kenji Johjima, Seattle
  • Jonny Gomes, Tampa Bay
  • Travis Snyder, Toronto

Sosa played just 16 games in the outfield during his last season, so I only list DH as a possibility for him in his quest to play in the league again. Good luck, Sammy. I think you’ll be needing it.

  • Joe LoCascio

Don’t hold your breath waiting Sammy.
