THE MMA TEN: FEDOR BLING

0

10. Need Some Tweaking: Rashad Evans didn’t tweak his nipples before his title fight with Forrest Griffin. The newly crowned champion said he thinks he started out slow because of this. Luckily(for him) he still won the match. I was disappointed when Sugar didn’t perform what’s become the pre-fight ritual of Greg Jackson’s team. Glad Rashad got that off his chest.

9. More Bling for Fedor: The WAMMA Heavyweight Champion is adding to his collection of expensive hardware, but it’s not another belt. He’ll receive a special ring commemorating the fact he won the first World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight title. Naturally, jewelry pimps Tiffany’s & Co. created a pricey little number. If Affliction takes another financial hit in its second show, will the ring be more valuable than the clothier’s struggling promotion?

8. Right Said Freddie: Boxing guru Freddie Roach told SI.com he thinks Fedor has no technique when it comes to boxing and that Andrei Arlovski will knock him out if the champ decides to stand with him. Andrei sought Roach’s boxing expertise and the man behind Manny Pacquiao’s success has been very complimentary of Arlovski’s hands. Lately, when Freddie makes predictions they’ve been coming true.

7. Killin’ Words: BJ doesn’t hold back does he? In his pre-hype interview BJ says he’s going to try to kill Georges St. Pierre when they meet for the welterweight belt. Hey BJ if you succeed, good for you– just don’t lick his blood like you’ve been doing to Sherk and Stevenson cuz we don’t need to see that anymore.

6. Primetime Hype: Expect to hear more entertaining soundbites from Penn because UFC Primetime debuts next Wednesday on SpikeTV. Following in the mold of “24/7? on HBO this series will follow the preperations by “The Phenom” and GSP for their welterweight clash at UFC 93. If they’ve got “24/7? on their mind expect this show to have exceptional production value. For me personally, sometimes “24/7? would pump me up more than the actual fight.

5. Motorheads & MMA: The Daytona 500 is considered the Superbowl of NASCAR races. Many NASCAR enthusiasts (and drivers) are also big MMA fans. Those who like both are in for a real treat Daytona weekend. Xtreme Fighting Federation will hold “Rumble in Race Town” the night before the 51st edition of the Great American Race. The card will feature UFC reject Jesse Taylor and Chicago’s own Terry Martin. This will do a great job of exposing the sport to more good ol’ boys.

4. Yvel Wait And See: MMA bad boy Gilbert Yvel still hasn’t received his license from the California State Athletic Commission so he can participate in Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” on January 24. He’s already been rejected by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Yvel doesn’t exacly have a nice image or reputation, and that’s likely what’s slowing things down. Affliction boss man Tom Atencio says he has a plan B if Gilbert doesn’t get it. I hope it’s not as stupid as plan A. Seriously, who signs fighters that have almost no shot at getting a fighter’s license in the United States?

3. I Just “Crush” A Lot: Dana White told ESPN The Magazine’s Ryan Hockensmith UFC 92 “crushed” the Lesnar/Couture event in terms of pay per view buys. While we don’t have tangible numbers to define what “crush” exactly means, deduce this: two awesome cards with lots of ‘high profile” matches accompanied by strong ppv sales makes for some major momentum going into UFC 93 St.Pierre/Penn II. The high promotional appeal of between BJ and George could be the difference between another spectacular showing in terms of buy rate. Think about it, if you bought the last two action-packed events you’re likely going to put in for this one based on expectation/anticipation. Fans are getting hooked!

2. Avoids Jailtime: Rampage Jackson accepted a plea bargain for that driving mis-adventure last summer. By doing so he avoids jail time. Part of the deal requires him to submit to frequent mental reports.

1. It’s Not Over: Quinton isn’t in the clear yet. He has to meet all his plea bargain requirements by the time of his sentencing, which is January 7, 2010. If he doesn’t do everything required then he faces up to 180 days behind bars. Here’s to being on your best behavior!
