UNCLE LOU IS SLIGHTLY BATTY

4

I can’t find the source, but valued reader MOD has a great Unca Lou quote: “We just need to win more than we lose over the next twenty games and we’ll be fine.” That’s kind of a Yogi Berra-Dave Wannstedt mix there.

At some point when my boss isn’t in the office when I have some leisure time I think I will try and compile a list of the best Piniella quotes of the year. And we will also revisit the stellar Cubs predictions made by Zoner Sports readers and other luminaries.

On the way in I heard “Waddle & Silvy” discussing a rather suspect move by Piniella in Monday’s win over the Cards. In the 7th inning Piniella was calling for a pinch-runner for Daryle Ward. Piniella inexplicably chose Jason Marquis. Not only is Marquis a vital cog in the rotation, he’s the starter for today’s game!

Lou needs a history lesson. Strange and frightful things happen to the Cubs for no good reason. It’s best not to ask for trouble. I don’t even like it when he pinch-hits pitchers, let alone uses them for pinch-runners.

I can’t remember, but didn’t Piniella do something similar a while back when he brought Zambrano in to pinch hit when he had a full bench against Colorado?

Sho did. I wrote about it here.

“We’ve been playing around .500 now for a long time,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. “I don’t think anybody thought that would be good enough. Over these next 20 games, we have to win more than we lose to give ourselves a chance. It’s whoever’s doing the best.”

Actual quote from Lou on Carrie Muskatt’s report of last night’s game. From MLB.com.

    Sorry for the paraphrase.

And yeah, that Marquis for Ward pinch run about made me fall off my chair.
He did that in Cincy alot. They won the whole thing in ’90. We’ll see. I think he’s egging on the ghosts of Wrigley past.

I love seeing Cubs fans afraid of getting Marquis injured before the playoff stretch. :)
    Good luck, fellas.
