WE’RE TALKING BOUT PRACTICE

5

Hey, I like Leo DiCaprio. Fantastic actor. Seems like a great guy. SO hot. But I’m tired of the celebrities/global warming angle. Why? Comments like this from Leo:

“Because we’ve waited, because we’ve turned our backs on nature’s warning signs, and because our political and corporate leaders have consistently ignored the overwhelming scientific evidence, the challenges we face are that much more difficult.”

I do not disagree with anything in that statement. But where is the entertainment industry in all these comments? No one jets–literally–around the country more than these people.

And what’s the deal with carbon neutral? Carbon offsets? Perhaps I’m glib on this, but isn’t that like dumping oil into the ocean and then paying for the cleanup? Electric used is electric used. Gas burned is gas burned. And so on. No one has to jet, no even has to fly commercially. No one needs a $1200 electric bill.

Not to be snot-nosed, but it sure doesn’t look like Gore is doing a lot of walking these days. Are these people all-in or what? We’re talking bout practice. Do they do enough of it?

The idea of the carbon offsets, or the cap-and-trades for industry, is putting a value on the fact that you or your business is more eco-friendly than the next, and that me being good balances out you being bad, and so at least the problem isn’t getting worse. That’s my understanding-and, yes, I share some of your skepticism. It all depends on how you calculate the thresholds and values, and we could be right back to corporations lobbying for parameters that really don’t make them work too hard, which is partly how we got in this mess to begin with.

However, if you look at offsets and cap-and-trades as just one part of an overall, multi-multi-pronged approach to curbing emissions, it’s a little easier to swallow and see where it might have some value.

The truth is there isn’t any one great solution to global warming-it’s going to be the result of everyone changing and thinking differently, and, shudder, not always putting self-interest first. Which is why it’s not going to be easy. But if even I, once the least green-thinking person ever, can be awakened, maybe there’s hope.

I would highly recommend the current double-issue of Time-I’m sure some of it’s online-which does an extremely good job of rating all the different things that can be done, and some exciting potential developments (we might be able to trap these gases back in the earth).

And: from what I’ve read, Ed Begley Jr. is like the only guy in America that can be throwing stones on this. The guy even takes the bus.

    Good stuff.

I too was un-green. It was actually when I read “Underworld” by Delillo that I began to see the effects of landfills, recycling, etc.

I’ve yet to see “An Inconvenient Truth”–on the DVR. But on the surface is sure seems odd that a lot of the people crying for change aren’t all-in yet.

  • shocker.

FYI…Leo drives a Prius. That gives him “street cred” with the Greens. Get off his back Zoner. They’re watching you.

  • Your Mom

I love how we instantly fall for the “Gore is spending X amount of dollars on his electric bill, therefore he’s a hypocrite” story. Can you say yet another (in a long line of) smear campaign?

    Whuh? Your Mom= Non-Sequitor
