WE’VE GOT WOOD–AS CLOSER
From the Trib: Manager Lou Piniella hinted Saturday the closer’s role could be going to Kerry Wood and that Carlos Marmol and Bobby Howry would be used again as the main setup men.
Piniella has said that the seventh- and eighth-inning pitchers actually need to be more durable than the closer because they make more appearances. While strong, Wood might be suited better as a closer because the work load wouldn’t be as strenuous.
“We’ll have something to say about the closer’s spot after we see them go back-to-back [games], but [that] thinking, it’s on the right track,” Piniella said.
Once again, Kerry Wood is dictating how the bullpen is being set-up, and not because he is the best pitcher throughout the spring.
That’s ok though. I trust Lou and maybe keeping Marmol in the 7th & 8th helps the team more at this point. Wood has pitched very well at times this spring. If he blows up, I just hope Lou is quick to squeeze the trigger. The Cubs play 15 of their first 18 games against divisional opponents. Maybe Woody will be the hollywood story we are all looking for. Or maybe by May he’ll be on the DL. We’ll be getting answers 2 weeks from today!!
