WILL OH, MAN

8

Cubs fans are delighted and steaming, all at once. Delighted because Felix Pie looked great in his debut. He saved the game in the 10th inning by throwing out Russ Branyan at the plate. It was a rope and it was right on the money. He also had an RBI-double.

But Cubs fans also have their first 2nd guess of the year. People are wondering why they sent down Angel Guzman instead of Will Ohman. And they have good reason to be miffed at this move, assuming Ohman is not out of options, which I was unable to find out.

Here are the reasons: Guzman has been pitching well and he can log innings. Ohman has been terrible and he is basically a left-handed specialist. The Cubs already have Cotts and Eyre, so a 3rd lefty isn’t exactly a need. His last 2 outings before yesterday were as bad as bad can be.

So when he took the loss yesterday in an exciting game, Cubs fans were up in arms. I think rightfully so.

And I think we all agree–if we didn’t already–Ryan Theriot needs to play everyday. The guy is a pleasure to watch.

    Ryan T for MVP.

Just kidding, but it has the rhyme and meter to be a cool chant.

    He is sweet.

    Great nickname too– “The Riot”

They sent down Guzman to stretch him out, so that he’s ready to take Wade Miller’s place in 10 days if he also continues to suck. Ohman is not long for the roster, one way or another – he’s already on Lou’s list for throwing “30 and 40 foot curveballs” in that one game – and he sucked the last two games as well.

Corey Patterson, Neifi Perez, Will Ohman. Fans need a whipping boy and Will fills the bill!

Stretch him out? For what? A couple extra innings? He can stretch out on the big club. So he only goes 5 innings his first start. Big whoop.

My wife was watching the game with me last Friday. She saw Theriot, and being the learning Cubs fan that she is didn’t know his name and said “Hey, there’s ‘the riot’”. She got the nickname even before she knew it was the real deal.

    Cool.

It’s even more cool your wife was watching the game with you.

What’s even cooler is that on our honeymoon we drove three hours to Miami to watch a meaningless game between the Marlins and Dodgers where she figured out the signals that Terry Mulholland was giving to his bullpen catcher. She was recognizing the difference between breaking pitches. She can spot the subtleties that separate good hitters from great hitters when I show her the comparisons.

    I am so blessed.
