WOOD MAY NOT BE READY TO CLOSE

Day 33 of the Kerry Wood Blister Injury…

From Chicago Sports:

Lou Piniella and Larry Rothschild huddled Monday to discuss their plans for Wood, who has pitched only twice since suffering his blister injury July 11.

“We’re going to give him one more ‘tightener,’ ” Piniella said. “He didn’t throw too many breaking balls [Sunday]. Kerry basically feels he’s ready, and you know what, he probably is. But I think we give him one more tightener, and then we move him back into the closer’s role.”

But that was before Tuesday’s game was rained out. The Cubs will play a day-night doubleheader today, so Piniella could use Wood as a closer in one of those games if needed.

With the medical marvels taking place these days, Wood could have had his finger amputated and then had a fresh one attached. Would have been out a week, tops. He then could have had the old one reattached after the season. Ya know, just sayin.
