YOU FORGOT SOMEONE, JERRY
Oops. Day one was looking really good for the Bears. Urlacher was signed. #1 pick Chris Williams signed and was in camp. Orton and Grossman seem ready to battle this thing out.
But then Devin Hester decided to sit it out. And suddenly remiss has a brand new definition. Sign the kicker–the kicker–to a long-term deal. Check. The oft-injured defensive tackle? Check. The aging middle linebacker that already has a contract? Check. The linebacker that said he would never play for the Bears again? Check. The most dynamic player the Bears have ever had save Gale and Walter? The greatest kick returner in NFL history? Ruh-Roh.
“Unexpected,” Angelo said. “I talked to [Hester's agent Eugene Parker] a few days ago and he floated it out there, but I didn’t really take it serious.”
Certainly there are two sides to every story. But you float it out there that he can be your #1 receiver, your best deep threat and be the dominant game-changer on special teams. Then mix in the fact that all these other players were getting paid. Guess what? I’d holdout too. At the very least there has been a huge breakdown in communication.
It’s a disturbing situation. But it’s still early. Let’s see what happens in a week or so. Then we can really freak out.
