ZONER’S MONDAY MORSELS
Quick hits while we wait for the winner of the “Overpay Aaron Rowand” contest…
I heard the criticisms, but I had to see it for myself. And after 11 games I have to agree–Adam Archuleta is not very good at football. It’s pretty obvious that he is an undersized linebacker playing safety. For someone who is supposed to “know the defense”, Archuleta sure looks like someone who has difficulty making reads on pass plays. And he cannot cover well either. That 5th round pick for Chris Harris better be a doozy…
Forget Kobe. Raise your hand if you wish the Bulls would have made a deal for Pau Gasol. There is not one player doing well so far this season. Hinrich finally broke out of it a bit, but they still lost. In seasons past I was confident they would break out of the slow start. This year, not so much.
So Kerry Wood comes back for one more year at a price tag of $4 million. If he stays healthy, becomes the closer and saves 30+ games, then it’s a great move. But that is not likely to happen (your choice of the 3) and it probably will be wasted money. I’m more excited for the return of Angel Guzman than I am the return of Kerry Wood. Although I am looking forward to the 2008 “Kerry Wood Wacky Spring Training Injury”.
Cedric Benson is out for the year. This is good news as the crutches will actually increase his speed. Let me officially jump on the draft Darren McFadden bandwagon.
Kudos to Dusty Baker and the Reds for signing Francisco Cordero. I had hopes that the Cubs would make a run for him. It’s a great move because Cordero has dominated since his return to the NL, and you just took away a division rival’s closer. I had thought that the Reds might have been a destination for Jon Garland. They need another starter for Dusty to pound on to be considered true contenders.
